Robert Mathews interview |
We would firstly like to thank you for visiting us at
HornetsNestPaintball.com, as with every experience in the
paintball industry we hope this one was to your liking.
A brief insight into where HNPB came from - how we got here and
where we're going.
Asking bob questions about the past, making the poor guy feel
old...
Feb. 28th 2008
How long have you been in the paintball
industry?
Bob: Since
1988! two full decades!
Did you play paintball before HNPB opened?
Bob: of
course
Really what's your most thrilling /
Memorable experience while playing?
Bob: Easily
the worlds largest paintball game in 1992: it was down in Jim
Thorpe Pennsylvania. I Took 1st place in the Big Game
Sharpshooter, I won the National Paintball Jacket - its still
hanging here in the pro-shop though its has a bit of dust on it.
Do you recall the first day you opened,
what was it like for you personally?
Bob: Yep, It
was great, the club finally had a local place to play and we
didn't have to drive so far for supplies
What made you want to run the field?
Bob: I was
retired from the police department, and it gave me a chance to
meet interesting people; and help educate players and parents
about the sport of paintball.
Did HNPB always have a pro-shop like the
one you have now?
Bob: No it
was started out of my basement.
How was the field Setup Back Then?
Bob: hmm
wooden spools, pallets, and only about 600 old junk cars.
How has the Facility changed over the
years?
Bob: We've
Tried to stay on the cutting edge with both equipment and
fields; feeding the sport exactly what it wants.
Where do you see HNPB going in the future?
Bob: Well its
been turning full circle, we've seen it moving more towards the
roots of paintball as in woods-ball etc. but still on the
cutting edge, Especially with the CQC Indoor; but don't worry we
have not forgotten about our speed-ballers.
What advice do you have for those new to
the sport - or those interested in playing?
Bob: I always
say never forget why you wanted to PLAY paintball, keep it fun
and interesting and always remember its only a game, so enjoy
the sport while you can; oh and bring a friend so you can go
home and remember the experience.
When people go to HNPB, will they see you
personally at the nest?
Bob: 99% of the time I will be there to
greet people and welcome old friends. Since the clubs inception
it has never been a job, but a way to meet good people and try
to change the bad ones. Good, bad or indifferent it has been a
hell of a run that I'm personally proud of, and I've gained some
awesome friends along the way.
